About Diabetic Eye Disease

High blood sugar (glucose) increases the risk of diabetes eye problems. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults age 20 to 74. The three major eye problems that people with diabetes may develop are cataracts, glaucoma, and retinopathy.

Cataract

Cataract refers to ‘clouded lens’. Normally, the lens of the eye is clear and allows light rays to pass through easily. If you have a cataract with diabetes, the lens in your eye becomes foggy and clouded and you may experience blurred or glared vision.

Treatment is usually surgery followed by placement of a lens implant.

Glaucoma

The front portion of the eye is filled with a fluid called aqueous humour. If the drainage of  this liquid from the front chamber is restricted, pressure builds up within the eye causing irreversible damage to the optic nerve (called glaucoma) thereby causing a permanent loss of vision.
Glaucoma

Glaucoma in early stages will not have symptoms. In later stages, it may lead to eye pain, coloured halo rings around the objects and loss of side vision. Testing involves checking the pressure inside the eye and by seeing the nerve concerned with vision.
Once vision loss starts it cannot be recovered. Hence detection at early stages is crucial to prevent vision loss.   There are medications to prevent further damage to vision and in advanced stages Laser surgery may be required.

Retinopathy

How does diabetes affect the eye?

Diabetes causes weakening of the small blood vessels in the body including the retina which serves as the screen in the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is gradual in onset and is related to the duration of diabetes. High blood glucose levels, high blood pressure ,smoking and genetics influence the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy.

Eye examination in diabetic retinopathy

Every diabetic is a potential candidate for diabetic retinopathy. There are no symptoms at the initial stages. Periodic eye examination with dilated pupils is the only way to detect early disease and prevent further worsening of vision.

Treatment

Lasers are widely used in treating diabetic retinopathy. Lasers are formed by an intense and highly energetic beam of light. They can slow down or stop the progression of diabetic retinopathy and stabilize vision.
